The Cold Baths: An Ecological Puzzle for the Paris Olympics

The Organizing Committee of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games did not anticipate the controversy surrounding the provision of ice services for the venues. However, this is indeed a significant issue, both from a sporting and environmental perspective.

From a sporting perspective, a portion of the ice is used for cryotherapy to aid in the athletes’ recovery. From an environmental standpoint, water is transformed into ice, transported by trucks, and then stored in freezers.

According to the tender document that we were able to review, a supplier is required to deliver nearly a thousand tons of ice – precisely 982.130 tons – to the nine sites across France (Île-de-France, Marseille, Lille, etc.).
