Comment: Companies themselves are to blame for the shortage of skilled workers

In recent years, the shortage of skilled workers has become a widespread issue in industry and business. Companies regularly call for politicians to bring skilled workers from abroad to end this crisis. However, the demographic factor is also contributing to this issue. Despite this, the crisis is largely homemade. This is due to the declining number of apprenticeships, and IT departments have failed to create the next generation of professionals.

While the immigration of skilled workers is necessary, many companies are reluctant to give career changers and starters a chance. They often favor experienced professionals, who in turn seek appropriate compensation rather than weekly fruit baskets. This results in a shortage of cheap skilled workers, and companies hire temporary workers for little money instead of providing long-term permanent employment.

This vicious cycle has led to highly qualified IT staff leaving Germany. This has resulted in companies recruiting haphazardly or with lengthy application processes. To keep our own experts in the country, a competitive salary and good work-life balance are necessary. Germany could become a pioneer by making its labor market more attractive in the long term.

Furthermore, existing potential must be activated through the qualification of employees on a large scale. There are currently two and a half million unemployed in Germany, and it is essential to harness their potential and not write them off. Until these steps are implemented, the complaining about the shortage of skilled workers should stop.
