Tesla’s IoT Vision Unveiled: The Keynote on Project Tempa

Tesla open yourself: building IoT opening keynote on project Tempa

The “building IoT” conference is set to take place on April 26th and 27th, 2023. The conference will be hosted by heise Developer, iX and dpunkt.verlag Munich. One of the highlights of the conference is the opening keynote, which will discuss Project Tempa. The project demonstrates how Tesla’s security system can be bypassed to grant access with a duplicate key.

The conference is intended for professionals who develop applications and products for the Internet of Things (IoT). This year’s conference is focused on the topic of Industrial IoT (IIoT). The organizers have invited Martin Herfurt as the keynote speaker, who will present the Tempa project. In 2022, Herfurt caught attention with his project, which used a duplicate key to access Teslas that were unlocked with an NFC card. He reverse-engineered the proprietary VCSEC protocol by analyzing the official Tesla Android app.

The aim of the keynote is to showcase the weaknesses in Tesla’s security system and demonstrate the dangers of poor product development in IoT projects. The rest of the program includes more than thirty lectures in three tracks over two days. Some of the scheduled topics include data analysis for IIoT, secure edge computing with Kubernetes, and IoT cybersecurity.

Tickets for the building IoT conference cost 1049 euros (plus VAT). Interested participants can subscribe to the newsletter or follow the event on Twitter. The hashtag for this year’s conference is #bIoT23.
