Smartphone Games Dominate the German Games Market

Smartphone games lead the German games market

Germany’s most popular gaming platform is the smartphone, according to statistics from the German games industry association “games”. However, the number of smartphone gamers has fallen by 700,000 compared to the previous year. Despite this decrease, there are still 22.8 million gamers using smartphones, far surpassing the number of console and PC gamers. When adding tablet players to the smartphone gamers, the mobile platform remains dominant.

On the other hand, consoles have continued to increase their user base, with 18.9 million users compared to the PC’s 12.9 million. The PC platform has experienced a decline of 1.4 million gamers. Additionally, the statistics indicate that 16.6 million users play games on both mobile and PC or console devices.

In terms of sales, smartphone and tablet games lead the market. Approximately 2.8 billion euros were spent on these games in Germany in 2022, with almost 99 percent of the expenditure coming from in-app purchases. Console games generated approximately 2 billion euros in sales, with 41 percent of this revenue coming from game purchases. The remaining sales were almost evenly divided between in-app purchases (29 percent) and subscriptions and online services (31 percent). PC games generated almost 1.6 billion euros in revenue, with 70 percent of this revenue coming from in-app purchases, and 15 percent each from paid games and online services.

The market data is based on surveys conducted by the GfK Consumer Panel and data.ai. The surveys involve 25,000 consumers and aim to represent the entire German population’s shopping and usage habits for digital games. The data also includes information from a retail panel.
