Revocation200: A BundID initiative to reduce energy costs and aid data deletion

Energy cost subsidy via BundID: revocation200 is intended to help with data deletion

Students can receive a subsidy of 200 euros to cover rising energy costs by registering for the BundID on the One-off payment200 website. To ensure complete deletion of the resulting data, IT security expert Lilith Wittmann and data protection expert and lawyer Christian Aretz have created revocation 200. Those who wish to delete their BundID data simply need to enter their email address and first and last name on an online form, which will automatically generate a revocation letter that the user can then send to the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI).

Authentication is required to delete the data from the BundID account through the online identification function of the nPA electronic identity card or other strong authentication methods such as the Elster certificate. However, this option will expire at the end of June 2023, which is why the Bavarian state government is requesting an extension of the limited transitional regulation for Elster by three years to lay the technical prerequisites for an easier switch to the nPA.

Alternatively, using the revocation option may be simpler for those who cannot remember their access data, or for those who prefer the route via data protection revocation. The BMI also offers the option of deleting the account under the “Access & Data” tab, which is a right granted by Article 17 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The Federal Ministry of Research recently celebrated more than 1.3 million new digital citizen accounts. This was due to the linking of BundID registrations and the energy price flat rate. Anyone who wanted the energy price flat rate of 200 euros per person had to register for the BundID.

Overall, the revocation option offers a simpler way for users to delete their BundID data without having to navigate the account deletion process, which may require authentication. However, those who choose to delete their account may still do so under the “Access & Data” tab.
