Review of Ninja Cast: Atomos HDMI Image Mixer with Clear App

Atomos HDMI image mixer: Ninja Cast with a clear app in the test

Video producers have come to appreciate Atomos for its compact HDMI monitors. Two popular models, the Ninja V and Ninja V+, feature 5.2-inch full HD touch displays and are priced at around 430 and 650 euros respectively. These monitors also function as HDMI recorders, supporting video signals in both SDR and HDR with up to 4K60 resolution.

One standout feature of Atomos’ monitors is the “AtomX Cast” expansion module, which costs around 215 euros. This module adds four HDMI inputs and one HDMI output, effectively turning the monitors into image mixing consoles. The combination of the monitors and the AtomX Cast allows video streaming via USB-C, making them suitable for use with programs like Zoom, YouTube, or Twitch. This puts Atomos in direct competition with Blackmagic Design and its ATEM Mini HDMI mixer, which offers similar capabilities across four different variants priced between 310 and 1060 euros.

The advantage of the Ninja Cast over its competitors is the ability to monitor sources and output signals without the need for a separate display. However, some users have complained about the module’s minimal number of buttons. While even the smallest ATEM Mini offers 69 dedicated buttons for various functions, the Ninja Cast only has eight multi-purpose buttons. Operating the Ninja Cast through the touch screen menus on the monitors can be cumbersome and less efficient.

To address this issue, Atomos released a desktop app for Windows and macOS in July 2023. This app allows users to conveniently set up and control the Ninja Cast from their computers. This update presents an excellent opportunity to examine the functionality of the switcher, including the desktop app, and compare it to the ATEM Mini.
