Proposed Serge Gainsbourg Metro Station near Paris Faces Opposition Petition

Baptize a metro station “Serge Gainsbourg”? The idea is far from unanimous. A petition has even been launched on November 26, 2023 to ask Île-de-France Mobilités to find another name for the future stop on line 11, according to Actu Paris.

The future station, which should open in spring 2023, is located in Les Lilas (Seine-Saint-Denis). The Parisian singer was chosen to baptize it in homage to his song Le Poinçonneur des Lilas.

A “spit in the face of the victims”

The petition, which has already gathered nearly 2,900 signatures, aims to draw attention, according to its authors, to “violence against women and pedocriminal or even incestuous tendencies” of Serge Gainsbourg. “We are outraged that his person is honored in the Paris metro, reads the petition. This decision is a spit in the face of the victims.”

The activists recall the most controversial lyrics of the singer as well as the accusations of domestic violence from his ex-partner Jane Birkin, published in a book. The signatories of the petition invite Île-de-France Mobilités to highlight, in the Paris metro, other personalities than men who “sang sadistic feminicides and incestuous rapes.”
