Paris: What is this huge wheel installed at the Trocadéro?

This article discusses the exhibition “Métro! Le Grand Paris en mouvement” at the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine and the installation of an impressive tunneling wheel at the Trocadéro. The exhibition aims to showcase the history and impact of the metro system in the Paris region.

The Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine, located in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, is hosting the “Métro! Le Grand Paris en mouvement” exhibition. Over a period of 7 months, visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the fascinating subway system and its influence on mobility and urban development in the region.

As part of this cultural event, the Société du Grand Paris, responsible for the design and construction of the Grand Paris Express transportation network, has installed a tunneling wheel at the Trocadéro, facing the Eiffel Tower. This impressive wheel, belonging to the tunneling machine named Dorine, is expected to attract the curiosity of passersby.

The tunneling wheel, also known as the cutterhead, is the drilling head of the circular machine used to excavate the metro tunnels. Dorine, the tunneling machine displayed at the Trocadéro, has a diameter of approximately 8 meters and has completed two excavation projects for the Grand Paris Express – one for the line 16 in 2021 and another for the line 17 in 2022. In total, Dorine has excavated nearly 3 kilometers of tunnel.

Visitors are encouraged to admire this impressive engineering feat in front of the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine, facing the Eiffel Tower.
