Paris summons Russian ambassador after opposition leader’s death

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died last week in a penitentiary center in the Arctic, where he was serving a 19-year prison sentence. French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Stéphane Séjourné, announced on Monday that he had summoned the ambassador of Russia to France following Navalny’s death in prison. “I have requested the summoning of the Russian ambassador today at 6:30 PM” (Paris time, 5:30 PM GMT), he said during a visit to Argentina, stating that “the Vladimir Putin regime has once again shown its true nature”. A diplomatic source told AFP that the Russian ambassador was indeed received at the appointed time. Madrid, Stockholm, Berlin, The Hague, and Oslo also announced on Monday that they had summoned the Russian ambassador to their countries. Moscow held responsible for his death by the West The death of Alexei Navalny, 47, in a remote prison in the Arctic where he was serving a 19-year sentence after surviving poisoning in 2020 which he blamed on the Kremlin, was announced on Friday. He died after three years of detention. Western countries hold the Russian authorities responsible for his death. The French Foreign Minister is visiting Argentina on Monday and Tuesday for his first trip to Latin America. At midday, he met with the President of Argentina, the ultra-liberal Javier Milei, and later with his counterpart Diana Mondino.
