Paris City Hall to Suspend Funding Pending Clarifications

The City of Paris announced on Wednesday evening that it would temporarily suspend its mandatory funding for the private institution Stanislas, which has been accused of “deviations” in an official report.

In light of the findings of the investigation, the City of Paris has requested “clarifications” from the government regarding Stanislas. While waiting for these explanations, the city announced that it would temporarily suspend funding for the highly selective private institution on Wednesday, where the children of the new Minister of Education, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, are enrolled. The city has decided to suspend funding for the institution “as a precautionary measure, pending the required clarifications from the State,” the City Hall said in a statement.

As per the report published by Mediapart, there were “derives” from a report accusing the school of homophobic and sexist practices, as well as multiple violations of the law. The city had provided a total of 1,373,905 euros for the 1,812 students (483 in elementary school and 1,329 in middle school) for the 2022-2023 school year.

Furthermore, Paul Vannier, a deputy from the 5th constituency of Val-d’Oise, has requested the Prime Minister and the Minister of Education to initiate measures to terminate the association contract between the school and the government.

Among the issues raised in the report, the obligation for students to attend catechism classes was mentioned, which is seen as a violation of freedom of conscience. The report also highlighted the limited coverage of contraceptive education in science classes, which goes against the education code’s requirement of following the public education curriculum.

Moreover, the City of Paris expressed surprise that the report had not been officially shared with the funding bodies and has requested immediate communication of the report and the subsequent action plan from the State. The city has stated that the payment of future installments to the school will be suspended for the current year until further information is provided by the State.
