COMMUNIQUE DE PRESSE

Paris Candidate to Host the Future European Authority
to Combat Money Laundering

Bruno Le Maire, Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, and Laurence Boone, the Secretary of State for Europe, presented the candidature of Paris to host the future European Authority for the fight against money laundering (AMLA in English) on behalf of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister. The city of Paris was supported by Alexandra Dublanche, Vice-President of the Ile-de-France Region.

The application was formally submitted to the European Commission on November 10th. The future AMLA would find in Paris the ideal conditions for its installation and those of its teams.

Firstly, France plays a leading role in the fight against money laundering. Paris is already host to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the European Securities and Markets Authority, and the European Banking Authority. Paris has for a long time had an international ecosystem dedicated to the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism (AML), within which the AMLA would find its place.

Paris also has many assets that can promote the development and influence of the AMLA. The French capital has a sustainable and cutting-edge real estate offering and high-quality air and rail connections facilitating the AMLA’s work. In the region of Paris, employees and their families can benefit from a wide range of international job opportunities, exceptional foreign language education, and unparalleled cultural and leisure offerings.

Le Maire emphasized, “We are proposing today that the AMLA can count on the international ecosystem of anti-money laundering and financial regulation established in Paris. The AMLA will be able to benefit from an installation project that we will support financially, in a particularly attractive region in terms of expertise, quality of life, and infrastructure.”

Furthermore, Boone stated, “The French candidacy to host the European Authority for the fight against money laundering testifies to the ongoing advances at the European level in favor of better European coordination on these subjects. It is essential to fight the financial crime in the most coordinated manner possible. The future European authority would find in Paris the ideal conditions for this coordination.”

Dublanche declared, “The teams from Choose Paris Region are determined to offer the best conditions for the installation of the AMLA in the Île-de-France region, as we have successfully done for the European Banking Authority. The Paris region offers an ideal setting for the AMLA, with high-quality infrastructure and a pool of talent, international education, social and medical facilities, and unparalleled connectivity in Europe. Alongside the President of the Île-de-France region Valérie Pécresse, we are excited to support our candidacy to host the AMLA and will make every effort to ensure that its establishment in Île-de-France proceeds under the best conditions.”

Hidalgo mentioned, “The City of Paris is sustainably committed to a policy of combating corruption and conflicts of interest. The presence of numerous international agencies and organizations in Paris will contribute to a better consideration of the issues of combating money laundering and terrorism financing. Paris, which is a major banking center in Europe, will also benefit from the AMLA’s establishment. Paris will facilitate to the best of its ability the establishment of the AMLA, its staff, and their families.”
