Paris 2024: 100 Euros and Two Tickets Promised to Students in Exchange for Their Requisitioned Accommodation

For the Paris 2024 Olympics, 2,200 students will need to be relocated because their Crous housing will be requisitioned to accommodate firefighters, healthcare workers, law enforcement, and civil security personnel. As compensation, the students will be offered alternative housing options, as well as a “€100” indemnity and “two tickets” to attend Olympic events.

The statement has sparked controversy. In an interview with Le Parisien, the Minister of Higher Education, Sylvie Retailleau, suggests the idea of “relocating these students during the two summer months, July and August, without any additional cost.” Additionally, she proposes offering a “€100 flat-rate financial assistance” and “two complimentary tickets to Olympic events.”

This compensation seems meager when considering the difficulties of finding or maintaining housing in the heart of Paris, especially for students. Retailleau responds by stating that every year in Île-de-France, 30% of Crous housing (equivalent to 6,000 apartments) remain unoccupied during the summer because students terminate their leases for various reasons.

The administrative court of Paris has temporarily suspended the Crous’ decision to limit the occupancy leases of student housing for the Paris 2024 Olympics until June 30th. Following an appeal by the Crous, a hearing before the Council of State is expected to take place by December 2023.
