OLED and more power: Apple is said to be planning this for the iPad

Apple last released new tablets in autumn 2022. At that time, the new entry-level model iPad 10 and an M2 version of the iPad Pro with 11 and 12.9 inches were released. But what’s next for the product line? Nothing has been heard from Apple this year with regard to tablets, apart from the announcement of iPadOS 17. In the worst case, it could stay that way. Apple may be stopping the iPad this year and not coming with new models until spring 2024. The iPad Air could be an exception. Ad Roadmap pretty foggy For example, the usually well-informed Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman believes that Apple will not update its iPad Pro until next year. The biggest change could be the introduction of OLED screens, which will replace the current LCD or mini-LED technology, in addition to a new SoC with M3. Apple has been working on it for years and also wants to equip MacBooks with it. However, the ultimate goal apparently remains micro-LED screens of our own design. Apple is currently using OLED technology in all current iPhones – with the exception of the SE – as well as in the Apple Watch and soon in the Vision Pro headset. Apple has so far avoided using it for larger screens such as the iPad or MacBook – probably because the company’s current quality is not sufficient. (OLEDs have been common in the Android and Windows sectors for years.) With the iPhone, Apple uses sophisticated methods to avoid ghosting effects, which often occur in the OLED sector. iPad Air and iPad mini Other new models from Apple in the iPad segment that seem to be in the pipeline are an iPad Air with M2 or M3 and a revised version of the iPad mini. The iPad Air was released in the fifth generation with M1-SoC in March 2022 and eke out a niche existence between the iPad Pro and iPad 10. The iPad mini last overtook Apple in September 2021 – with a new form factor and USB-C connection. Since then, interested parties have been waiting for customers of a new model. Gurman and other rumor mongers are at odds over when the iPad Air and iPad mini will be overhauled. There’s still a slight chance Apple could do that in the fall — either in September for the traditional iPhone announcement, or in October when iPadOS 17 is expected. The entry-level iPad 10, introduced in autumn 2022 as mentioned, could remain untouched for a long time, even if it’s not perfect – for example in terms of Apple Pencil support.
