Nightmarish Accident at Vuelta Extremadura: Fan Triggers Opi-Omi Deja Vu

Vuelta Extremadura: Fan causes horror crash – reminiscent of "Opi-Omi" incident

Horror Crash at Vuelta Extremadura

Such accidents are simply completely unnecessary. What was she thinking? A horror crash occurs on a stage of the Vuelta Extremadura 2023 cycling tour on Friday. The fault lies with a woman who gets too close to the track. The woman who was responsible for the accident can be seen on the right edge of the picture Photo: Twitter The incident is strongly reminiscent of the person who caused a mass accident in 2021 with an “Allez Opi Omi!” at the Tour de France…

What Happened?

The field of drivers drove normally along the route. Suddenly there is a horror crash because a woman with a pink jacket is standing very close to the track and is trying to film what is happening with her smartphone. As a result, a driver collides with her – and other competitors are also cleared as a result. Among others also Owen Lightfoot, who starts for the Maglia Tecnosylva Bembibre Team. He also posted a video of the incident on Instagram.

He wrote: “I was in the bunch sprint today and was in a near perfect position when the rider in front of me was knocked over by a spectator filming with his phone.”

Call for Responsibility

Lightfoot further commented: I don’t know why people feel the need to film and hold their phones in front of drivers who are driving at 60 km/h putting the drivers and themselves at risk. I’m lucky that I only have a few abrasions, because it could have been a lot worse.

The organization also issued an official statement drawing attention to the incident. The Vuelta Extremadura 2023 Twitter page said: We would like to call on the public to behave responsibly so that accidents like the one at the end of today’s stage do not happen again. It’s important to keep your distance and not enter the track while the field is passing.

Cycling Competitions Need Caution

The bad accident brings back memories of a crash at the Tour de France 2021. At that time, a woman held a large cardboard sign with the inscription “Allez Omi Opi” in the camera, but was too far on the road. The result: a crash involving 61 drivers. Of the 21 injured, four had to end the tour. It didn’t end that badly this time – but it shows again and again that special caution is called for in cycling competitions of all kinds.

It is important for both the spectators and the drivers to exercise caution, so as to avoid unnecessary accidents and prevent any injuries or harm to individuals involved in the race. Such incidents can be avoided through responsible behavior, good planning and following safety guidelines.
