New Group Fitness Format in Paris Causes Members to Leave Neoness

The Parisian network of fitness centers, Neoness, has started a major restructuring of its group exercise classes as of January 1, 2024. This is a sensitive subject, as these classes have greatly contributed to creating its identity over time. Many places have been drastically reduced, classes have become more generic, and the spaces are less intimate. The formula has nothing to do with its predecessor and has been renamed “small group training.” This abrupt transformation has been difficult for some members to understand, leading them to cancel their memberships.

Pauline, 27, and her roommate have decided to cancel their memberships. They have been regulars at the République (11th) and Jaurès (19th) fitness centers since October 2022, where they exclusively practiced Pilates. The changes were a complete surprise to them, as they had not received the email informing members of the new developments. The duration of classes has been reduced from 45 to 30 minutes and the capacity has been restricted to a small group of people, making it difficult to find a free time slot without a reservation.

More than 4000 members have signed a petition to try to make the management reconsider, but their efforts have been in vain. Meanwhile, the president of the group Keepcool, which acquired Neoness in the summer of 2022, remains pragmatic about the changes. He acknowledges that the changes were not anticipated and expresses a willingness to listen to feedback and make adjustments to better meet the demands of members.

Despite the backlash, the president of Keepcool defends the changes, arguing that they are intended to improve the overall experience for the majority of members. He clarifies that they have invested in the renovation of machines and plan to further remodel the exercise spaces. The decision to group disciplines into “major families” is intended to create a more comprehensive and functional approach to fitness.

For Pauline and her roommate, the changes were enough for them to end their memberships and switch to a different gym that offers Pilates classes in addition to climbing lessons. These changes continue to be a topic of debate among members, highlighting the complexity of managing the expectations and preferences of a diverse fitness community.
