New Firmware Updates for Apple Accessories Now Available Online!

Apple accessories: Numerous firmware updates available | hot online

After the holiday weekend, Apple has released new firmware updates for several of its devices. The reason for these updates was apparently fixed security gaps in their implementation of the Bluetooth protocol. All current audio devices from Apple, including several older models, have been updated. This includes AirPods 2 and 3, AirPods Pro 1 and 2, and the over-ear headphones AirPods Max.

The new system software, 5E135, was distributed to these devices. The update is not an easy one, requiring users to listen to an Apple Music song on their iPhone for about a minute before inserting the plugs into their case. The AirPods Max must be placed in their case for the update to begin.

Apple has not provided specific information about the content of the updates, but at least for the AirPods, there is a directory that lists the current version. Additionally, Apple has saved an update for the Studio Buds, which is set to be released soon.

The updates were prompted by a security issue discovered by the Google ChromeOS team. The problem affected the Bluetooth protocol and could allow attackers within Bluetooth range to gain access to users’ headphones by spoofing the intended source device. This bug has been fixed by improved authentication in the new firmware updates.

In addition to the new firmware versions for the audio devices, Apple has also released an update for its MagSafe charger for iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods. This charger can be used from iPhone 12 and has reached version 10M1821. Apple has not published a leaflet, and the update is done over the air without any specific initiation required. Plugging the MagSafe Charger into a power adapter while an Apple device is hung up may aid in the update process.
