Nanny on Trial in Paris for Killing an Eight-Month-Old Child

“If we had any warning and did not trust her, we would not have left our children with her,” asserted the mother of the second infant being cared for by the accused, describing a good relationship with her employee.

The nanny, recruited by the family and a neighboring couple living in the same building since January 2019, is being charged with violence resulting in the death of a minor under the age of 15 without the intention to do so. She denies the events that took place at the victim’s parents’ home on May 22, 2019.

Shaken Baby Syndrome

On that day, around 9 a.m., the infant’s father leaves his home, entrusting his son to the nanny. At 11:58 a.m., emergency services receive a call from the woman, who claims that upon waking up from his nap, the child had vomited and is now in a coma. Upon arrival at the scene, the attending physician immediately considered the possibility of Shaken Baby Syndrome based on the absence of visible physical injuries, neurological abnormalities, and the frequency of the child’s cardiac and respiratory arrests. This hypothesis was further supported by forensic doctors who confirmed the compatibility of the child’s injuries with Shaken Baby Syndrome.

The nanny denies the allegations

The nanny, on the other hand, previously stated during questioning that the child exhibited unusual behavior, was particularly agitated, and crying on the day of the incident, placing the blame on the parents and a fall that allegedly occurred under their supervision several days prior. This version of events was refuted by both the father and various experts who affirmed that despite a fall, the interval between the fall and the onset of symptoms in the child would have been too long.

Psychiatrists also stated that the accused did not suffer from any cognitive disorders that could have impaired her behavior at the time of the incident. The father of the victim portrayed the child as “energetic” and “doing well,” supported by photographs. “I left home with no reason to believe I should stay. I left peacefully,” he added.
