Mexico Shuts Down Migrant Detention Center in Ciudad Juárez After Fire

The immigration station of the National Institute of Migration (INM) in Ciudad Juárez recently made headlines after a tragic event that claimed the lives of 39 migrants and left 28 others injured due to a fire that broke out. However, in a recent press briefing, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, announced that the INM center will be permanently closed.

During the press briefing, Rodríguez confirmed the suspension of the operation of the immigration station in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, declaring that “the migrants housed there will be transferred to the Leona Vicario Center.” The decision was made to close the INM center as a measure to prevent further tragedies from happening.

Additionally, the contract with the security company Camsa, which was responsible for the surveillance of the INM station, will be terminated. These actions are part of the Mexican government’s “zero impunity, zero corruption, and zero complicity” policy.

In other news, the four migrants who were hospitalized after the tragedy have already been discharged, but 24 are still receiving treatment. This event serves as a reminder of the dangers and risks that migrants face when trying to cross borders in search of better opportunities.

It is important for authorities to provide safe and humane conditions for migrants, and for individuals and organizations to advocate for the protection of migrant rights. As communities, we must work together to create a world where migration is not associated with danger and tragedy.
