Sevilla parts ways with coach Jorge Sampaoli
Six-time European Cup winners, Sevilla, announced on Tuesday evening (March 21, 2023) that they have parted ways with coach Jorge Sampaoli. The decision came after the team’s 2-0 defeat by FC Getafe.
Basque coach José Luis Mendilibar appointed as successor
Following Sampaoli’s departure, the Andalusian club has appointed Basque coach José Luis Mendilibar as the new coach. The 62-year-old has signed a contract till the end of season, June 30th, and will lead his first training session in the evening.
Mendilibar has the task of steering Sevilla away from the relegation zone, where they currently sit in 14th position with only two points separating them from the relegation zone.
Sampaoli’s tenure at Sevilla
Sampaoli’s tenure at Sevilla was marked with disappointment as he failed to improve the team’s performance. His failure to take the team out of the relegation zone ultimately led to his dismissal.

Despite their dismal performance in the La Liga this season, Sevilla is back on track in the Europa League. They are set to meet Manchester United in the quarter-finals.
