MacOS 13.3 Troubles: External User Folders Locked, SMB and OpenCore Issues

Problems with macOS 13.3: locked external user folders, SMB, OpenCore

Mac users who have relocated their user folder to an external drive should hold off on importing macOS 13.3 for now. Reports indicate that after installation, logging in becomes impossible as the registration process gets stuck in an endless loop and is never completed, rendering the account inaccessible. The only solution is to restore macOS 13.3 with a current backup and keep the user account on the internal drive, provided that there’s enough space. It’s still unclear whether Apple has taken any action to investigate the issue, and the cause of the problem remains speculative. Although swapping out the user folder on an external drive is a relatively rare configuration, the operating system officially supports it. To access the option, go to “Users & Groups” in settings, click “Advanced Options,” and select the context menu.

Meanwhile, the problems with SMB (Server Message Block) file shares that some Ventura users have been experiencing aren’t entirely resolved with macOS 13.3. Although access to shares appears to work again for some, it continues to fail for others. A potential workaround is to remove all shared folders, turn off file sharing in “Preferences > General > Share,” restart the Mac, and then turn file sharing back on.

OpenCore Legacy Patcher users must update to the new version 0.6.2 before updating to macOS 13.3. Otherwise, the new version of the operating system can cause graphics and display issues on certain older Macs. However, macOS 13.3 appears to create difficulties in conjunction with the OpenCore Legacy Patcher, such as the deactivation of AMFI (Apple Mobile File Integrity), which is part of the security system in macOS to ensure that only correctly signed code runs. This could result in a few apps getting stuck at startup and potential problems with streaming DRM content, such as Netflix or Apple TV+.
