Light Pollution: A Growing Concern Beyond Astronomy

Problem not only for astronomy: warning of increasing light pollution

Light pollution from satellite constellations and LED lights is a growing concern, according to a special edition of the scientific magazine Science. Astronomer Antonia Varela Perez blames Starlink and other satellite constellations for the progressive loss of the night sky. The increasing use of LED lights, which have a higher blue component that scatters more in the atmosphere, is also a problem. The impact of light pollution extends beyond astronomy and can have consequences for the environment, ecosystems, and human health. There is a need for better ways to measure and compare light pollution, as well as for regulations and improvements to existing practices. Cosmologist Aparna Venkatesan warns that the decisions made now will have consequences for centuries. Light pollution has been recognized as a growing problem, with the night sky getting brighter by ten percent each year. However, it is possible to stop light pollution if measures are taken to reduce artificial light sources and implement better product design and guidelines.
