Encrypting App Data Made Easier with Apple’s CryptoKit Framework

With data protection regulations becoming more stringent, app developers need to prioritize the encryption of sensitive and confidential data. However, the old CommonCrypto library for cryptography operations on iOS devices was often bulky and error-prone, leaving developers with limited options.

To address this issue, Apple has introduced the CryptoKit framework for iOS devices that provides a modern tool for cryptographic operations across all Apple platforms. In a recent Mac & i webinar, expert app developer Klaus Rodewig shared how developers can implement cryptography with CryptoKit in iOS apps for encrypted data transfer and storage.

The 120-minute webinar, called Security Best Practices with CryptoKit, took place on April 26, 2023 and was moderated by Mac & i editor Inge Schwabe. The session was aimed at developers and discussed the challenges that arise when cryptography is used across different systems.

Rodewig demonstrated the entire implementation of a challenge-response procedure using CryptoKit, covering every aspect of cryptographic operations, including exchanging data with a backend server. He further explained how to generate a signing key in the Secure Enclave on an iPhone to ensure secure data encryption and decryption.

Participants who attended the webinar had the opportunity to ask questions via chat and receive unlimited access to the recording and all materials. A ticket to participate cost €129, but developers can opt for the Mac & i Pro subscription for admins and developers and attend the webinar for free. The subscription provides access to a total of 24 webinars each year.

In conclusion, with the CryptoKit framework, encryption of app data has never been easier for developers looking to store and transfer sensitive data securely across different software systems.
