Veeam has unveiled version 6.0 of its Kubernetes backup software Kasten K10, at its in-house exhibition VeeamOn in Miami. With this update, the provider of backup software aims to keep pace with the rapid developments in Kubernetes. The new version supports Kubernetes version 1.26, as well as popular commercial Kubernetes distributions like Red Hat’s OpenShift Container Platform, VMware Tanzu, and the managed offers of hyperscalers Azure AKS, Amazon EKS, and Google Kubernetes Engine.
Kasten K10 runs as a Kubernetes-native deployment in the Kubernetes cluster, which gives it a full overview of the resources present in the cluster. The new version also brings significant improvements in the areas of scalability and efficiency. Improved metadata transformation is an additional feature that is necessary when restoring and migrating applications between different environments.
An essential focus of the new version is protection against ransomware attacks, which the tool accomplishes by analyzing the audit logs generated by Kubernetes. The software also comes with integrations with Red Hat Advanced Cluster Security for Kubernetes and Amazon’s GuardDuty threat detection service.
Earlier in October 2020, Veeam bought Kasten.IO, a start-up founded in 2017, with Kasten K10 version 4.5. The company has not announced an exact date for the release of version 6.0 but expects it to be available by the end of the second quarter of 2021. Businesses that want to try out data protection with Kasten K10 can benefit from the free version that offers all the features for Kubernetes clusters with a maximum of five Kubernetes worker nodes.
