JO-2024: Air traffic forbidden within 150km of Paris during opening ceremony

Air traffic will be banned within a 150 km radius around Paris on the evening of July 26, 2024, during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, the French Civil Aviation Authority informed AFP on Monday.

“During the opening ceremony of the Olympics on Friday, July 26, 2024, a strict temporary no-fly zone, with a radius of 150 km and no altitude limit, will be set up around Paris between 7 p.m. and midnight,” the DGAC told AFP.

This measure will interrupt operations at the two largest French airports, Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle and Paris-Orly, as well as Beauvais (Oise), which specializes in low-cost flights, at the beginning of a weekend in the peak summer season.

“Except for emergency flights and flights that may benefit, as an exception, from a derogation granted by the Air and Space Force, no flights (takeoff, landing, or overflight) will be allowed in this airspace during the specified time slot,” the DGAC insisted.

According to the same source, “usual users, airlines, professionals, and individuals, will be invited to postpone their activity or to bypass this zone during the period.”

“Traffic regulations will be implemented from 5 p.m. on Friday, July 26,” the DGAC also explained.

Other measures regulating air traffic will be put in place for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Currently being developed, they will be specified in the spring of 2024, according to the administration.

The DGAC reassured that “the search for the best balance between maintaining air activity and guaranteeing the safety of users and people guides the action of these works.”
