Google Unveils Pixel Fold, The Latest in Folding Smartphones in Video Demo

Google shows folding smartphone Pixel Fold in the video

Google confirms Pixel Foldable Smartphone launch at Google I/O 2023 on May 10th, putting an end to rumors about its first ever foldable phone. Technical details are still scarce, with only a short computer-generated video being released. The phone is codenamed “Felix” and it boasts a particularly robust hinge. It will be available later this summer and will cost $1,700 or more, putting it in the same range as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4.

According to rumors, the Pixel Fold will have a 5.8-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch touchscreen that opens on the inside. It will be slightly heavier, weighing in at 280 grams, but it will offer a stronger battery than comparable models. The Pixel Fold is rumoured to be powered by a Tensor G2 chip, which is already in the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.

The video confirms that the Pixel Fold will look similar to the Pixel 7 series, with the camera module on the back. What’s interesting is that the Pixel Fold has an almost full-surface front display even when folded, which means that it can be used like a standard mobile phone without having to unfold it for normal activities.

With almost all major cell phone manufacturers now offering foldable smartphones, Google’s Pixel Fold is set to bring this form factor closer to the mainstream. The foldable selection in Germany is currently limited, with many Chinese manufacturers not bringing their foldable phones to the market in this country. However, models from Samsung and Motorola (Lenovo) are available.

Apart from the details of the Pixel Fold, the Google I/O 2023 developer conference on May 10th is expected to focus on AI. Observers anticipate information about products and technologies related to artificial intelligence that Google is currently working on. It may also feature news about Bard, Google’s answer to OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT, as well as AI products that can generate images, program apps or test prototypes.
