MEPs Call for Global Summit on Dangers Posed by Artificial Intelligence

Members of the Christian Democrats, Social Democrats, Liberals, Greens, and EKR are calling for a global summit to discuss the risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI). In their open letter, they urge US President Joe Biden and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to agree on guiding principles for the development, control, and use of powerful AI systems.

Given the rapid development of advanced AI, political attention is needed to ensure that AI systems are secure and that fundamental rights are respected. Negotiations on comprehensive rules for the use of AI are already underway in the EU.

While numerous researchers and entrepreneurs have called for a six-month moratorium on the training of very advanced AI systems, the MEPs do not agree with this approach. They share some of the concerns expressed but disagree with some “alarmist” statements.

Currently, text machine ChatGPT, Google’s competitor software Bard, and programs that generate images based on text descriptions are causing concern. There is a worry that their capabilities could be used to produce and spread misinformation.

The Italian data protection authority has already blocked AI service ChatGPT from Microsoft partner OpenAI in Italy. It is important to ensure that AI systems are developed with caution and transparency to prevent any misuse.

Guidelines and regulations must be put in place to control the rapid development of AI and to safeguard fundamental human rights. The proposed global summit could help to agree on these principles and promote the responsible use of AI technology.
