Friday: Ad-supported TV with surveillance, TSMC with falling profits

A start-up in the USA is offering a 55-inch diagonal 4K TV for free rental, but there’s a catch – constant surveillance and ongoing advertising. TSMC, the world’s largest chip manufacturer, is experiencing falling sales due to declining demand for electronics. The company’s production using 5 and 7 nanometer technology accounts for 53 percent of sales. However, production in the USA is being delayed due to a shortage of skilled workers. German video conference provider, Alfaview, is accusing Microsoft of abusing its market power to prevent competition in video conferences. In the US, adult Americans can now rent high-resolution 4K televisions with a 55-inch screen diagonal and a speaker bar. This service is provided by start-up Telly, which plans to sell half a million televisions this year. The financing for this comes from advertising that runs on a supplied 9-inch screen beneath the television, but users must accept numerous conditions and disclose personal information. The falling demand for desktop PCs, notebooks, and smartphones is having financial consequences for TSMC, resulting in declining sales and profits. Although sales from 3-nanometer production are expected in the third quarter, the company’s forecast falls short of last year’s sales. There are also problems in the new US chip factories of TSMC. German video conferencing provider, Alfaview, is in competition with Microsoft Teams and is complaining to the EU Commission about Microsoft’s alleged market power abuse. The new event center MSG Sphere in Las Vegas features a 111-meter high and 157-meter wide spherical building equipped with 1.2 million individually controllable LED elements. The interior of the sphere includes an LED display the size of two football pitches, giving visitors a view of the stage. The structure of the auditorium is similar to a classic amphitheater. The bankruptcy of Dutch bicycle manufacturer VanMoof highlights the customer hostility of smartification and flash scaling. The film “Oppenheimer” explores J. Robert Oppenheimer’s involvement in the construction of the atomic bomb during World War II. While there is no clear evidence that the Germans were working on an atomic bomb, their nuclear reactor research was significant.
