Paris 2024: Fear of Parisian balconies collapsing during the opening ceremony of the Olympics

The 26th of July 2024, the day of the spectacular opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, the Parisian balconies will undoubtedly be crowded, and some are at risk of collapsing under unusual weight.

Overlooking the Seine, like the balcony of the theater, the Parisian balconies will offer an unobstructed view of the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games on July 26th. But observing some signs of dilapidation and cracks, are they really able to accommodate groups of spectators? In theory, the balconies are built to support, per square meter, 350 kilos, equivalent to four people weighing 87.5 kilos each. However, due to defects or carelessness, collapses are regular in France, with an average of one per month. In the event of an accident, the entire co-ownership can be held responsible.

Not systematically checked

The checks are not systematic. The trustees want to send a letter of recommendation to all owners within the next few weeks. Haussmannian buildings, typically Parisian, are not the only ones to be monitored. Collapses also affect newer constructions, especially in concrete.
