Christoph Daum: The Coach Who Refuses to Back Down
Christoph Daum (69) is once again making waves in the football world. According to reports by BILD and SPORT BILD, a TV documentary about the former 1. FC Köln coach will be aired on October 24, in honor of his 70th birthday. The production is currently being shot by filmmaker Marc Schlömer (45) from Banijay, who is working with Daum who is currently battling lung cancer. Negotiations with a TV station are in the works.
Daum is known for his candidness and he doesn’t shy away from discussing his battle with cancer. In fact, he told SPORT BILD (in an interview to be published today), “The cancer can’t get me down.” Despite being on the mend after chemotherapy he remains critical of Cologne’s current austerity course, particularly Steffen Baumgart’s management decisions.
Baumgart has been praised for his “full-throttle” football style, despite the club’s shortcomings. However, Daum believes that the executive committees are making key mistakes by allowing the sales of important players like Anthony Modeste, Salih Özcan and Ondrej Duda. The latter was separated from the team during the season and the club is currently only six points away from relegation.
