Experience the Futuristic World of Cyberpunk 2077 with Raytracing Overdrive Graphic Mode on PC

"Cyberpunk 2077": Graphics mode "Raytracing Overdrive" available on PC

CD Projekt has finally released the much-anticipated update for the PC version of “Cyberpunk 2077”. The patch introduces a new mode called “Raytracing Overdrive”, supplementing the previous ray tracing options. While the previous modes still displayed some elements in raster graphics, the new Overdrive mode completely eliminates the compromise. The update is free and available to all PC users, but only those with the latest Nvidia graphics card can take advantage of the new functions.

Path tracing, a pure form of ray tracing, creates a much more precise lighting effect. Light rays are reflected multiple times, creating a realistic display. Even car headlights and the muzzle flash of firearms are now presented realistically. The result is impressive and surpasses the previous ray tracing options, making them appear outdated in comparison.

However, path tracing is demanding on system resources. Even the RTX 4090, the highest-end GPU on the market, only manages around 22 frames per second in 4K resolution with ray tracing enabled. Slightly more affordable graphics cards, such as the RTX 4080 and RTX 3070 TI, perform even worse, managing almost 15 FPS and less than 12 FPS, respectively. DLSS2 and DLSS3 can improve frame rates, but this comes at the cost of small image artifacts.

Those without an RTX 30 graphics card will need to settle for less. The overdrive graphics mode is currently unsupported on anything less than an RTX 3090, and users with lower-end cards should expect around 30 FPS at 1080p. For those wanting the best visuals possible, trying the path tracing mode in photo mode is another option.

The overdrive mode is currently available as a “Technology Preview”, described by CD Projekt and Nvidia. The two companies could optimize and improve performance in the coming months.

While this update feeds the appetite of enthusiasts with the latest hardware, most players still have to content themselves with videos of cyberpunk showcases, longing for the future of games. At present, the current Xbox Series X and Playstation 5 gaming consoles don’t have enough power for real path tracing.

CD Projekt is currently working on a new DLC called “Phantom Liberty,” scheduled for release in 2023. After that, the further development of “Cyberpunk 2077” may be scaled back. Despite its rocky start, the game is now running smoothly on most platforms. The recent release of the Netflix anime “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” has boosted the number of players.
