Enhanced Gmail and Google Chat: The Latest AI-powered Communication Tools

AI features for Gmail and Google Chat

Google is introducing new AI functions to its services, specifically updates for Gmail and Google Chat. The aim is to increase efficiency for users. There are changes to search in Gmail so that not only will emails containing the search term appear, but also those that match it. Machine learning models use search terms, recent emails, and other relevant factors to display results that best match the search query. The update will be available to all users on mobile devices within the next two weeks.

Google Chat users will also get the new Smart Compose feature that is already built into Gmail and Google Docs, which is a writing aid based on machine learning. Smart Compose suggests suitable words directly when writing, which saves time and helps avoid spelling and grammatical errors. The feature is currently only available for the web application of the chat and initially only in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian. Smart Reply, with suggested answer options, is also available in the chat.

Microsoft offers similar functions with its Office applications, where the copilot serves as an AI assistant with writing, evaluating, analyzing, and more. Teams can already suggest answers. Smart features can be selected, and de-selected, under the privacy settings of the account. As soon as they are available, they are also activated by default, and the data is transmitted to Google accordingly. When sending a message, users can choose not to get any suggestions temporarily by adjusting their chat settings.
