Darmanin condemns assault on a sexagenarian outside a synagogue

The act is “unqualifiable,” according to Gérald Darmanin. A sexagenarian leaving a synagogue in Paris on Friday was attacked and insulted as a “dirty Jew,” police sources said on Saturday.

“According to initial information, a new anti-Semitic attack took place in Paris yesterday evening,” the Interior Minister wrote on X. “Everything is being done to find the perpetrator of this unqualifiable act,” he added.

Darmanin reinforces the protection of the Jewish community.

The attack took place on Friday at 5:30 p.m. on Rue des Orteaux, in the 20th arrondissement, police sources said. The man, “wearing a kippa,” was leaving the synagogue and was attacked by a man who then “fled on foot,” the sources said. The attacker “insulted the victim as a ‘dirty Jew’ while hitting him with punches and kicks,” one of the sources detailed. The victim was taken to the hospital by firefighters.

The Interior Minister on Friday asked the prefects to strengthen measures to protect the Jewish community, especially around schools and places of worship, after recent events in Gaza, according to a note seen by AFP on Saturday. On Thursday, a humanitarian aid distribution in Gaza turned tragic after Israeli gunfire and a stampede left 115 dead, according to Hamas.
