CNH T4 Electric Power: The Unmanned Tractor Revolutionizing Farming

First autonomous electric tractor CNH T4 Electric Power enters the field

Italian-US agricultural and construction machinery manufacturer CNH has teamed up with electrified agricultural machinery specialist Monarch Tractor to develop the world’s first autonomous electric tractor. This tractor will be known under the names New Holland Agriculture and CNH Case IH (also T4 Electric Power). The companies have set a target for series production to begin in late 2023.

The T4 Electric Power is designed to be an efficient and eco-friendly alternative to traditional diesel tractors. Its electric motor delivers approximately 88 kW (120 hp) with a maximum torque of 440 Nm, reaching a top speed of 40 km/h. The battery is expected to be sufficient for a whole working day, depending on the application profile. The battery can be recharged using conventional rapid charging systems that are capable of fully charging the battery in just one hour.

The T4 Electric Power features several sockets that can be used to connect electrical work equipment such as drills and welders. It can also act as an emergency generator, and mechanical and hydraulic attachments can be connected. Compared to a conventional diesel tractor, the T4 Electric Power offers better traction control, more aggressive responsiveness, and more efficient operation. Its lower maintenance costs mean that operating costs could be up to 90 percent lower than those of a diesel-powered tractor.

The T4 Electric Power is designed to work extremely quietly, with noise reduction of up to 90 percent compared to conventional tractors. Nighttime operation is also possible, making it suitable for use in stables where it can protect the nerves of livestock. The autonomous functions of the T4 Electric Power include a range of sensors and cameras housed on the roof. The tractor has autonomous driving options and can be controlled and monitored remotely via an app, including the performance and battery status. The T4 Electric Power also features a shadow follow me mode that allows it to sync up with other farming machines and work with them in the field. 360-degree obstacle detection technology helps when avoiding objects.

CNH also offers other tractors for sustainable agricultural cultivation with alternative drives, including the New Holland T7 Methan Power LNG and the T6 Methan Power, which can be operated with gas. The T4 Electric Power is expected to revolutionize the agricultural sector with its advanced technology and eco-friendliness, setting a new standard for autonomous machinery.
