Census: Paris Continues to Lose Residents

According to the annual census survey by INSEE, the capital had 2,133,111 inhabitants on January 1, 2021, a decrease of 0.6% on average over the period 2015-2021.

Paris continues to lose residents, with an average of 12,230 inhabitants leaving each year since 2015. Some districts experience more significant population declines than others, such as the 7th district.

In contrast to Paris, the Île-de-France, the most populous region in the country, continues to gain residents at a rate of 0.3% per year since 2015, the same growth rate as the national average for the period 2015-2021. Overall, 12,317,279 inhabitants reside in the most populated region of France.

Looking at the details, the INSEE data shows that the most populous district in Paris remains the 15th, with 227,746 inhabitants, followed by the 20th (189,805 inhabitants) and 18th (188,446 inhabitants). The 15th and 20th districts both have a negative average annual growth rate (-0.5%) for the period 2015-2021, as does the 18th district (-0.8%).

Some districts of the capital experience more significant population declines than others, such as the 7th district, with an average annual growth rate of -2.1% between 2015 and 2021, and the 10th district (-1.6%).
