Canon’s R5 Firmware Update Unleashes 402 Megapixel Pixel Shift Feature

Firmware update brings pixel shift with 402 megapixels for Canon's R5

Canon Releases Firmware Updates for EOS R3 and EOS R5 Cameras

Canon has announced new firmware updates for two of its popular mirrorless cameras, the EOS R3 and EOS R5. As with other modern system cameras, these new updates will maintain the models via firmware updates. The EOS R3 will now have version 1.40, while the EOS R5 will have version 1.8.1, both coming with a range of functional innovations.

Improved Autofocus Priority Function on EOS R3

The EOS R3 camera can now preserve the faces of up to ten people before a picture is taken, with autofocus priorities assigned to each. Canon recommends the feature for Weddings or events such as concerts or theater performances. For instance, the bride and groom can have their faces saved with the highest priority, guaranteeing better-focused pictures at all times.

“Swivel Assistant” Function on EOS R3

The EOS R3 also features the new “Swivel Assistant” function. Primarily used for sports and action, this feature uses a system that controls the image stabilizer during recording, creating shutter speeds up to two stops longer.

Improved IBIS High Resolution Function on EOS R5

With the update to the EOS R5, the IBIS stabilizer of the sensor is now used better in pixel shift mode, increasing the camera’s resolution. Using multiple exposures, the sensor is shifted by a pixel before assembling the images into one image with higher resolution. The R5 now outputs 24576 x 16384 pixels, equivalent to 402 megapixels. However, this feature only works with still objects, such as nature or product photography, as any movement can cause blurred images.

Ease of Handling FTP Connectors

Both cameras have been updated with improvements in handling FTP connections, including an “automatic protection of images.” However, it is unclear what Canon means by this statement, mainly because pure FTP connections are unable to provide secure encryption. The mobile file transfer app has been upgraded to handle such concerns, uploading images directly to an SFTP server via smartphones.

Availability

Users can download updates for both cameras from Canon’s support area. These firmware updates are critical, and users are encouraged to update their cameras to install the new and improved features.
