Canon Aims to Close the Gap Between EF and RF Lens Lineup by 2028

Canon wants to catch up with the EF lineup for RF lenses by 2028

Canon to Expand RF Lens Range

Canon is aiming to expand its range of lenses with the RF bayonet at a quick pace, according to Vice President Takeshi Tokura in an interview with the Japanese business newspaper Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun. So far, there are about 30 lenses for the RF bayonet in the mirrorless system, mostly in full format.

Tokura says that the range of “seven to eight” new optics will be released every year. Canon currently sees the “basic range” of RF lenses being reached. Canon from the DSLR era has over 70 lenses available for the EF mount but Tokura did not deal with third-party providers, who have to purchase expensive licenses for the RF bayonet.

Mirrorless Technology Remains the Focus

According to Canon, by 2028, the number of RF lenses available for EF should match the current number, assuming the company can keep up with the rhythm of the new products. The focus of all new developments is on mirrorless systems. New lenses are usually presented together with camera releases. Recently, a 24-50mm for full format and a 55-200mm for APS-C were announced with the EOS R8 and R50.

As the industry continues to shift to mirrorless technology, Canon is working to stay ahead of the game by expanding its RF bayonet lens range.
