BMW 5 Series Incorporates Electrification in All Drive Types

Electromobility: BMW's 5 Series gets all drive types, including electric

BMW continues its commitment to offering all drive types as part of its electromobility strategy. The company plans to release the BMW i5 electric car as part of its 5 Series lineup in addition to offering a variety of combustion engine and plug-in hybrid options. The i5 will be launched in the autumn of 2022, and BMW plans to present both the new luxury model and the i5 in early summer.

BMW’s drive portfolio for its 5 Series will be as broad as that of its 7 Series, which includes an i7 electric car. The new 5 Series will be available in various drive types, including turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, plug-in hybrid, and electric drive. The revamped 5 Series will continue to be available in both a sedan and a touring option. A hatchback version of the BMW 6 Series GT will be available only until early 2024.

In addition to offering a wide range of drive options, BMW is setting its sights on fast charging that works even in extreme temperatures. The electric range of the upcoming BMWs in the 5 Series lineup is estimated to be over 100 kilometers, and their uniform neodymium-free e-drives allow for efficiency in road operation and better design characteristics. The company’s batteries utilize a low-cobalt cell chemistry, which reduces the amount of critical raw materials used.

The highly anticipated i5 M version will also be released in late 2024 or early 2025. This plug-in electric car is expected to have all-wheel drive and torque vectoring and will be on par performance-wise with the i5 plug-in M5 version. The i5 M will include two rear-wheel electric motors that offer torque vectoring in addition to a front-wheel drive option.

BMW’s commitment to offering all drive types, including electric cars, is a strategic move for the company. As the market continues to evolve, the automaker is poised to stay ahead of the competition by providing a range of options for drivers. With the release of its i5 and its continued focus on fast charging, BMW is showing its commitment to staying at the forefront of electromobility.
