Ban on Algeria-related protests scheduled for Sunday in Paris

The police prefect of Paris has banned protests against the Algerian government planned for Sunday in Paris, due to risks of public disorder “in the context of the anniversary of the Hirak and violence between opposing anti and pro-regime factions.”

Last week, Laurent Nuñez had already banned such gatherings for the same reasons. Three gatherings, scheduled to take place on Sunday at Place de la République, were banned on Friday by prefectural orders. These include the “Movement for Justice and Against Corruption in Algeria,” a collective for “the immediate release of all detainees and political and opinion prisoners in Algeria,” and “for the installation of a sovereign constituent assembly,” as well as another collective, “Free Algeria.”

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Hirak, a popular protest movement initiated in 2019 to oppose Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s bid for a fifth term as president, which ultimately led to his resignation.
