Apple TV gets Multiview for Sport, HomePod OS gets an update 16.5

Apple TV adds new multiview mode for sports fans

Apple has introduced a new multiview mode for its Apple TV box in a move that will particularly interest sports fans. Part of the tvOS 16.5 update released on Thursday, the feature allows up to four streams to run concurrently, with the ability to choose between four similarly sized windows or one main image with three smaller ones. Currently, though, the function is only available for Apple’s own sports programmes, which include Major League Soccer and Major League Baseball live shows, as well as Friday Night Baseball games, which require a TV+ subscription.

Update for the HomePod

Apple has also included an update for the HomePod operating system. Installed via the Home app on an iPhone, iPad or Mac, the 16.5 version improves performance and stability. Meanwhile, for Apple TV, the latest software brings stability and performance improvements, as well as fixing some security issues. The multiview feature is currently the only externally visible improvement.

Things to note

The new multiview function is not available for Apple TV HD models, and the feature is only intended for live games. It is not presently clear when the function will apply to other kinds of video. Apple experienced a brief service outage on Thursday affecting Apple Music and Apple TV services.
