Apple Introduces Feature Enabling Saving the iPhone PIN

After change: Apple allows saving the iPhone PIN

Apple has made adjustments to data and privacy protection in the upcoming iOS 17, set to be released in September. One area that has been affected is the iPhone PIN, which is vital for device security. Previously, if you forgot or someone changed your PIN without your knowledge, you would be locked out of your iPhone permanently. However, Apple has now added a feature that allows users to undo a PIN change within a 72-hour window. This gives users more time to regain access to their device if they forget their PIN or if it is changed by someone else.

The new “Passcode Reset” function in iOS 17 allows users to enter their previous PIN to undo a recent change. After the 72-hour window, the change becomes permanent. Apple has also included an additional security measure called “Now let previous passcode expire”, which can be found in the Face ID or Touch ID settings. This feature allows users to delete their previous passcode in advance.

While the 72-hour function provides some convenience in case of a PIN change, it does not necessarily offer more security. There have been reports of iPhone thefts where criminals have been able to access Apple accounts by obtaining the PIN. The 72-hour window may help users regain access to their iPhones quickly, but their accounts could already be compromised. Crooks may take advantage of the option to let the old PIN expire immediately, negating the purpose of the 72-hour function.

Apple acknowledges the need for further security measures to prevent PIN takeovers in the future. Software boss Craig Federighi stated during the WWDC 2023 developer conference that they are exploring alternative solutions. However, it is unclear when these measures will be implemented. Until then, users are advised to exercise caution when handling their iPhone PIN.
