Anti-Semitic Remarks on the Paris Metro: Opening an Investigation

A video circulating on social media shows a group of young people singing anti-Semitic remarks in a Paris subway car. The Paris prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation, including charges of “apology for terrorism,” after being alerted by the Paris police prefect, Laurent Nuñez, about the shocking and unacceptable comments made on the Paris subway. The video, which has been circulating since Tuesday evening, shows a group of young people singing anti-Semitic remarks such as “Screw the Jews and screw your mother, long live Palestine yeah yeah, Screw the Jews and grandmothers, we are Nazis and proud.” The woman who posted the video confirmed that the incident occurred on Tuesday at 6:20 PM on Line 3, and that some people tried to intervene but were deterred by the large group.

“We will not let this go unchecked. All investigative resources are being utilized to quickly identify the perpetrators,” said the Paris Police Prefecture in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).

The Paris prosecutor’s office has immediately opened an investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible for statements that violate the law and may involve various charges depending on the nature of the statements. The investigation has been entrusted to the regional transport service, according to the prosecutor’s office. This investigation includes charges of “apology for terrorism,” “public insult based on actual or perceived ethnicity, nationality, race, or religion,” and “public incitement to hatred, violence, or racial discrimination.”

Since the start of the conflict between Israel and Hamas on October 7, a total of “857 anti-Semitic acts” have been recorded in France and “425” people have been arrested, according to Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin. This comes hours after blue Stars of David, symbols of the Jewish religion and the State of Israel, were found spray-painted on several buildings in Paris. Additionally, nearly 6,000 reports have been filed on the Pharos platform.
