The latest version of the c’t security tool, Desinfec’t 2023, is now out and available for download for subscribers and buyers of c’t issue 13/23. This tool helps scan Windows for Trojans and ensures that private data remains safe.
The c’t issue containing Desinfec’t 2023 is now available in the heise shop and will also be available at newsstands on May 20th. The output can also be obtained on a USB stick, from which the security tool can boot directly.
Desinfec’t 2023 has a new operating system, Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS, and increased compatibility due to kernel versions 5.19 (standard) and 6.2 (optional). In case of an emergency where Windows is spinning or doesn’t start at all, Desinfec’t acts as a helper and starts directly from a USB stick. This allows for examination of the inactive Windows installation from a safe distance to avoid further damage from Trojans.
The current version of the c’t security tool is equipped with several virus scanners, including ones from Eset and WithSecure, to detect and eliminate computer malware. Free signature updates are included for a year, and they are installed automatically before each scan if there is an active internet connection.
Desinfec’t 2023 is designed for easy use, even for computer beginners. The desktop appearance has been deliberately based on that of Windows, and icons are clearly labeled for easy operation. Family admins can also remotely control problem computers using the integrated TeamViewer client for assistance.
To avoid false alarms, uploaded finds can be directly submitted to the online platform Virustotal, which assesses them using more than 60 scanners. Desinfec’t can also eliminate identified Trojans to ensure computer safety. For expert virus hunters, Open Threat Scanner and Thor Lite Scanner are available, but their use requires extensive knowledge of malware to evaluate the results correctly.
The c’t issue 13/23 containing Desinfec’t 2023 is available for purchase in the heise shop, with waived postage until May 27, 2023. The booklet is also available digitally on a USB stick, from which the security tool can be started immediately. Subscribers to c’t can obtain the stick at a reduced price by logging in to the heise shop and pre-ordering it.
