A gathering was scheduled for 2 p.m. at Place de la Nation in Paris, at the request of a collective to commemorate the national Chahid Day (martyr), which pays tribute to Algerian fighters who died during the Algerian War (1954-1962) which led to the country’s independence.

Sunday also marks the fifth anniversary of the Hirak, a popular protest movement that opposed the 2019 election for a fifth term of Abdelaziz Bouteflika, prompting him to resign. Gatherings were planned in the capital for the anniversary of the creation of the Hirak.
