A Young Woman Speaks Out Against a Violent Assault in the Street

A 27-year-old woman has reported a rape that occurred on Saturday night in the Oberkampf street of the 11th arrondissement in Paris. The victim filed a complaint and an investigation for rape has been entrusted to the second district of the judicial police (2nd DPJ), as confirmed by the Paris prosecutor’s office.

According to Le Parisien, the incident took place around 5am when the young woman was walking home after spending the evening with friends in the Stalingrad neighborhood. A man on a bicycle approached her, pressed her against a wall, and raped her.

Several rape cases have occurred in recent weeks in the capital. In early August, a 47-year-old woman was raped at knife point in a building on Boulevard de Charonne (Paris 11th) while she was sleeping on the ground floor with the window open. A 22-year-old Algerian, in an irregular situation and who had just been released from prison, was apprehended.

A few days later, an Austrian citizen was also raped in the street as she was leaving a bar in the 10th arrondissement. A 21-year-old woman also reported being raped by a waiter in a bar in the 18th arrondissement. Finally, a 55-year-old woman was raped in late August in the elevator of her building in the Batignolles neighborhood.

According to the figures from the prefecture of police, there have been 67 rapes committed in public places in Paris between January 1 and August 31, 2023, compared to 69 during the same period in 2022.
