To help others speak confidently about AI, we reached out to top journalists in the industry for their best tips. Here are seven things to keep in mind when discussing AI:
1. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek out resources to help you understand AI terms and concepts. Even experts in the tech field struggle with jargon at times. Watching explanatory videos on platforms like YouTube can demystify the language used in AI.
2. Understand that AI is not a single monolithic technology but rather a collection of various diverse applications. Distinguishing which type of AI system you are referring to can help ensure a more nuanced conversation.
3. Stay pragmatic and realistic in conversations about AI, focusing on what these technologies are capable of today rather than what they may become in the future. Be skeptical of claims made about the potential of AI.
4. Language models that power chatbots or other AI systems sometimes “hallucinate,” i.e., make things up, as a natural part of their functionality. Expecting some inaccuracies and falsification can help adjust our use and application of these systems accordingly.
5. Be aware of biases in AI applications that can perpetuate existing social inequities or exclude certain groups. Examining the underlying data and algorithms enables insight into how both our own biases and structural inequalities become embedded in AI systems.
