2024 Olympics: What We Know About the Theft of Sensitive Information on Paris City Hall’s Security Plan

An investigation for theft has been opened after an engineer from the municipality of Paris lost a USB key containing information related to traffic in the capital during the Olympics, as indicated by the Paris prosecutor’s office to our colleagues at franceinfo, partially confirming information from BFMTV.

The agent lost a bag containing this key on Monday at the Gare du Nord and filed a complaint. The investigation has been entrusted to the transport network security. The USB key did not contain sensitive security devices, the prosecutor’s office also specifies.

“No sensitive data”

An agent of the City of Paris filed a complaint at a police station in the 10th arrondissement on Monday evening, as confirmed by the Paris City Hall in a statement this Wednesday at noon. A complaint “following the theft of his computer equipment”. But the City Hall downplays the situation. “The initial checks have established that the agent did not have any information regarding the organization and deployment of law enforcement during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. This computer equipment contained internal notes related to his work at the IT department of the traffic and transportation division. All necessary resets were carried out to cut off all access to the City’s computer system,” explains the press release.

The City Hall also specifies that an investigation has been carried out “in response to proven breaches of internal security procedures.”
