Ukraine Expresses Interest in Rolls-Royce Small Modular Reactor for Mini Nuclear Power Plant

Mini nuclear power plant: Ukraine interested in Rolls-Royce Small Modular Reactor

Energoatom, the operator of Ukrainian nuclear power plants, has expressed interest in operating Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The company has signed a letter of intent with British firm Rolls-Royce, which is currently developing the technology for these mini-nuclear power plants. According to Energoatom, the agreement could facilitate the rebuilding of the country’s energy infrastructure destroyed in the war. SMRs could also make Ukraine one of the first countries to use this technology.

SMRs are small and medium-sized reactors with an electrical output of up to 700 MW. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has defined them as modular, where all the essential components of a primary circuit are contained in a single module, manufactured in a factory and later transported to the construction site.

Rolls-Royce first announced its plans for a mini-nuclear power plant in November 2021. The British Space Agency supports the manufacturer’s plan to also develop the technology for the moon.

The energy supply situation in Ukraine is precarious, especially after attacks by Russia on the infrastructure. The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, Ukraine’s largest nuclear power plant with an output of 6000 MW and six blocks, has been under Russian control for over a year after the invasion. All reactors have now been shut down and are only being cooled and monitored.

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi has renewed his warnings of a more dangerous situation in the nuclear power plant. He also pointed out the pressure to which the nuclear power plant workforce was exposed. The reduced staffing levels combined with the psychological stress from the ongoing military conflict are impacting nuclear safety and the protection of the power plant.

This agreement between Energoatom and Rolls-Royce could be a solution for Ukraine’s energy supply challenge, as SMRs may provide the necessary energy infrastructure. By using this technology, Ukraine can take several steps towards becoming a sustainable and energy-efficient country.
