Building together in a world of rivalry
A consensus on global governance is possible
In a world where polarization and competition are increasing, it has never been more urgent for the international community to find common ground to face common challenges. It is in this context that the 6th edition of the Paris Peace Forum will focus on ways to build together in a world of rivalry.
Facilitating dialogue, creating action-oriented coalitions, and defining norms is how the Paris Peace Forum aims to provide effective responses to the urgent challenges of our time. By presenting transnational solutions, projects, and initiatives, the Forum will highlight actors from around the world whose actions and commitments are making a difference for our planet.
Sessions will facilitate geopolitical dialogue between different types of actors from the United States, China, Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America. Superpowers, emerging powers, and representatives of regional blocs will be able to confront their visions of the world, the future of global governance, and their concrete proposals.
Highlights of the 6th edition
This year, the Forum will focus on the following four themes:
Protecting the planet and its people
The damage caused by climate change and human activities to nature and ecosystems compromise food security and endanger the world’s populations and living beings as a whole. We are using the equivalent of 1.7 Earths to maintain our current way of life and existing ecosystems can no longer meet our consumption demands (Global Footprint Network, 2022).
From the polar regions to space, the Paris Peace Forum will propose solutions to make global governance of new frontiers clean and sustainable. The Forum will host the first Polar Summit, bringing together scientific experts and political leaders to work together to protect the poles from climate change. It will also present the progress of its initiatives on space, critical minerals, and climate with the conclusions of the Climate Overshoot Commission on climate risk and follow-ups to the Summit for a new global financial pact on climate finance, in preparation for COP28.
Ensuring trust and security in the digital world
More than 5 billion people out of the world’s 8 billion inhabitants use the Internet, about 66% of the world’s population (ITU, 2022). Emerging generative AI technology could have a significant impact on the world’s economies and societies. The extraordinary possibilities offered by the digital world are accompanied by major potential risks and significant inequalities. Measures must be taken to fully harness the potential of technology while putting safeguards in place to protect against its abuses. The 6th edition will bring together actors in generative AI to address the main risks posed by this new technology that is also rich in promises.
The digital ecosystem will also be mobilized on cybersecurity with the Paris Call and the protection of children online.
Reducing inequalities and accelerating the achievement of the SDGs
The year 2023 marks the halfway point in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). But the progress report shows that only 12% of the goals are on track, 50% are weak or insufficient, and 30% are at a standstill or are regressing. Faced with this situation, the Forum will highlight initiatives to build a more equitable world.
Five months after the Summit for a new global financial pact, we will review the next steps in the reform of development finance. We will also present the progress of our work on food security and global health.
Building peace and a safer world
The Global Peace Index published in 2023 by the Institute for Economics and Peace has decreased for the 13th time in 15 years. As the world faces the highest number of violent conflicts since World War II, the program will highlight efforts to build peace and support fragile countries in a context of “multicrisis,” and will highlight initiatives taken in favor of the integrity of information.
