An accused sentenced to two decades in prison for an insult to his mother. On Thursday, September 28, 2023, a 26-year-old man is appearing before the Paris criminal court for two days. He is charged with attempted murder for hitting his cousin with a hammer after a dispute.
A heated argument gone wrong. The incident occurred at the construction site of the Gare de l’Est. On April 14, 2022, tensions were high within the team of workers. The accused and his cousin, who have been close since childhood and work on the same construction site, were at odds. The reason: the accused allegedly insulted the other’s mother, calling her a “whore.”
The two individuals then decided to have a face-to-face confrontation. During the meeting, the cousin reportedly repeated his insults, provoking the anger of the accused. The accused then grabbed a hammer and struck his cousin in the head. Blood was shed, causing panic among their colleagues. Emergency services arrived at the scene.
The accused denies intending to kill. The victim was hospitalized and placed in a coma. Initially, his life was in danger. However, his condition eventually improved, and he came out of the coma. He was given a three-month work disability. When questioned and placed under investigation, the accused denies intending to kill his cousin. Described by his loved ones as hardworking and reliable, he explains that he simply wanted to have a conversation. The repeated insults from his cousin allegedly “triggered an outburst of anger.” He then grabbed the hammer in the room and struck without aiming for the head.
Insults or rumors? This version seems to be contradicted by the victim. When questioned, he explains that he was hit with a hammer from behind while other colleagues were present. The injured party also denies having insulted the accused’s mother. He claims that these were just rumors.
The judges and jurors will have to shed light on this case during the two-day trial. However, despite the victim being a civil party in this case, the two individuals reportedly forgave each other after the incident.
