Leverkusen Fans Stage Unusual Protest Despite FC Bayern’s Victory

FC Bayern defeated, but Leverkusen fans protest against their own goals!

Bayern Munich recently suffered a curious defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, losing 2-1 despite their status as reigning champions. This setback sees them placed second in the Bundesliga, just behind their next opponents, Borussia Dortmund. However, the manner of their defeat has caused some controversy, with a video assistant referee (VAR) intervention proving decisive in the match.

During the game, Leverkusen fans unfurled a banner calling for the abolition of video evidence, accusing its use of making “monkeys” of decision makers. The wording of the banner was particularly pointed given that two penalties in favour of Leverkusen were awarded after video reviews.

The first came after Pavard kicked a Leverkusen player on the heel, initially only receiving a yellow card. Upon further review from VAR, the referee awarded a penalty to Leverkusen, leading to a 1-1 tie. Later in the game, a similar incident led to another Leverkusen penalty, and a 2-1 win.

This unusual use of VAR has raised questions among fans and commentators, with some suggesting it needs to be re-evaluated. Even DAZN presenter Laura Wontorra and expert Michael Ballack, who analyzed the game in detail, joked about the banner during their analysis.

As Bayern prepares for their upcoming game against Dortmund, their recent loss has given them more to consider than just the gap in points between them and the table leaders. With VAR interventions still controversial, the team will need to keep their heads clear and focus on the game ahead.
